Belle & Sebastian Announce New Album And Tour, Share “Unnecessary Drama”

Belle and Sebastian announced A bit of precedent, their first studio album in seven years, out May 6 via Matador. (Not counting the 2019 Summer days in Bagnold soundtrack.) After plans to head to Los Angeles in 2020 fell through due to 2020, the band recorded in their hometown of Glasgow.

“We did it together, us and the city,” says bandleader Stuart Murdoch in the album’s liner notes. “This record was the first ‘complete’ LP recording for B&S in Glasgow since Fold your hands child1999. We clocked in every morning, we played our songs, we wrote together, we tried new things, we took the proverbial lump of clay and threw it away every day.

The album’s first single is “Unnecessary Drama,” which is as close to riffy, crunchy power pop as they’ve ever attempted, with Stevie Jackson on groaning harmonica (shades of Johnny Marr). “The song is about a youngster trying to become a human again after a forced hiatus,” Murdoch explains. “The person wonders if it’s worth it or not! Yet you dip your toe in it and it becomes delicious, and you take too much. Between boredom and nothing, we still choose boredom.” You can watch the video

A bit of precedent is available in four different album covers, and you can check out the composite of all four covers and the album’s track listing below.

Belle and Sebastian also announced 2022 tour dates, including a late spring North American run that took them out with Divino Niño, Thou Sacred Soulsand Los Bitchos at various stops. All dates are listed below.

The NYC show is at SummerStage in Central Park on June 16 with Los Bitchos. Tickets for all tour dates go on sale Friday, March 4 at 10 a.m. local time.
