Dallas Summer Musicals gets a big rebrand on Broadway for the 2022 season

Ssince 1941, dallas summer Musical comedies debuted The Best of Broadway on the stages of Fair Park, kicking off the national tour of Anne To have Your Firearm with Married Martin to obtain Dallas’ exclusive rights to hamilton in 2019. In addition to bringing in hot shows, talents like Debbie Reynolds, Judy Garlandand Carol channing also honored Music Hall through the nonprofit. But despite its long presence in the city, the organization has never hesitated to change its name. Originally known as “Opera Under the Stars” in the pre-AC era, the group has gone by a variety of nicknames over the decades, though its latest name may have the most staying power at this point. day : Broadway dallas.

“We changed our name from dallas Summer musicals at Broadway dallas to accurately capture who we are and what we do,” Ken NovicePresident and CEO of Broadway Dallas, shared in a statement.

This reach became even clearer last Wednesday evening when the non-profit organization launched its “Spotlight dinner series, performed on the Music Hall stage. As guests dined under the house lights, Novice and other Broadway Dallas executives presented piecemeal (with appropriate theatrical flair) the upcoming season’s slate — all of which inspired the dish that was currently at hand. For my lovely lady, there was a selection of tea sandwiches and Pimm’s Cups. For Red Mill!, guests enjoyed a decadent crème brûlée, while all courses were thoughtfully paired with Hall Wines. But when Kill a mockingbird was announced, it became clear that the moniker “Musical” was no longer appropriate. Plus, with a lineup running throughout the year, “Summer” has pretty much tipped over into deception.

Broadway Dallas more effectively covers the range of organization, but also scale. The bulk of the Dallas Summer Musicals hamilton winning in 2019 was a boon for Dallas theatergoers, but it may have been an even greater triumph over DSM’s main competitor, the AT&T Performing Arts Center. A partnership was struck, allowing Broadway Dallas to host upcoming shows like Tootsie (April 18-30, 2023) and Six (December 6-25, 2022) at the glittering Winspear Opera House in the Dallas Arts District.
