Authorities confirmed that the man had been transported to hospital shortly before Iron Maiden headlined onstage, and his death is believed to be unexplained.

What happened at the Download Festival?

Police have confirmed that a man has died after a medical incident at the Download Festival on Saturday June 11.

A statement from Leicestershire Police said the force was investigating the circumstances surrounding the festival-goers’ deaths.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: ‘We can confirm the death of a man who attended the Download Festival at Castle Donington over the weekend.

“The man fell ill during the festival on Saturday evening (June 11) and was taken to Derby Royal Infirmary where he sadly died.

“The death is being treated as unexplained and inquests are still ongoing.”

An eyewitness reportedly said LeicestershireLive“It happened just before Iron Maiden arrived and I noticed people were screaming and then the paramedics were going back and forth to help whoever it was.

“It was during the first song that they were taken away. I don’t think a lot of people realized what was going on at first.

The man’s death comes shortly after the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) and Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulances were dispatched to the festival following reports of a separate medical emergency involving another festival-goer.

An EMAS spokesperson said: ‘We received a call at 12.49pm on Saturday June 11 in Castle Donington, Leicestershire, for assistance with a medical emergency.

“The air ambulance was present and assisted the medical teams on site.”

No other details regarding this incident are known, as this person’s condition is also unknown.

What is the Download Festival?

Download Festival is a British rock festival which was founded in 2003 as a sort of follow-up to the Monsters of Rock festivals which had taken place between 1980 and 1996 in Donington Park, which Download describes as “the spiritual home of rock”.

While interest in Monsters of Rock festivals had waned over the years, eventually leading to its demise, Ozzfest 2002 showed that there was a renewed appetite for rock and heavy metal gigs among the British public – enter the Download Festival.

Starting out as a two-day event with two stages, Download has since grown into Britain’s biggest and most popular summer rock and heavy metal festival, featuring performances by some of the genre’s biggest bands including Slipknot, Linkin Park, Thin Lizzy, Guns N’Roses, Rammstein, AC/DC and many more.

The 2022 festival kicked off Friday June 10 and ended Sunday June 12, and featured performances from acts like Kiss, Biffy Clyro, Korn, A Day to Remember, Rise Against, Funeral for a Friend, and Marianas Trench. .

Next year, the 2023 festival will mark Download’s 20th anniversary.
