Conceived, directed and composed by Meredith Monk, “Indra’s Net” is a new evening-long interdisciplinary experiential musical theater piece affirming the interdependence of life. It will star Meredith Monk, Paul An, Theo Bleckmann, Gideon Crevoshay, Allison Easter, Ellen Fisher, Katie Geissinger, John Hollenbeck and Allison Sniffin. Joining Monk and his vocal ensemble will be a chamber orchestra comprising Jennifer Ellis, Tony Gennaro, Keefe Ismael, John Ivers, Nayoung Jung, Kyle Ko, Genevieve Kromm, Rhein Matlack, Yuki Nagase, Erika Oba, Shaina Pan, Nasr Sheikh, Jamael Smith , Julian Sommer and Michiko Theurer. Scenography and costumes by Yoshio Yabara, lighting by Joe Levasseur and sound by Daniel Neumann.
After “In the name of nature (2013)”, a plea for ecological awareness, and “Cellular Songs (2018)”, which drew attention to the fabric of life itself, “Indra’s Net” is the Monk’s third work in a trilogy devoted to our relationship with the natural world.
In the ancient Buddhist / Hindu legend of Indra’s Net, an enlightened king, Indra, spreads a great net across the universe with an endlessly faceted jewel placed at every intersection. Each piece of jewelry is entirely unique but reflects all the others, illuminating the interdependence of all living things, a metaphor particularly appropriate for our present time.
Initially scheduled for November 2020 and delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be created in a concert version for a limited capacity audience.
7 p.m. on November 12; 5 p.m. 13 November. Live viewing available on Mills Performing Arts website.
