The Pretty Reckless have been around for over a decade and are the only female-led rock band to have had seven No. 1 singles. Despite their success, singer Taylor Momsen admitted that it took them a while to to be accepted by other rock bands and described their early years as an “uphill battle”.
The Pretty Reckless released their debut album Light Me in 2010, but before that, Momsen was known for her roles in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Gossip Girl and more. Having always considered herself a musician first, she was determined to prove that she was serious about rock ‘n’ roll.
Between their second record of 2014 go to hell and its follow-up 2016 Who are you selling for? the band scored four consecutive No. 1 singles and then their final album death by rock and roll earned them three more.
Momsen reminded iHeartRadio Canada that there weren’t as many female-led rock bands in the early days of TPR as there are today, and that it was kind of hard for them to be. accepted by their rock ‘n’ roll contemporaries as they dragged on.
“I think we’ve been around for a while now, and I think we’ve definitely felt a shift in the acceptance of other bands and the industry and things like that, where I think at the beginning it was kind of an uphill battle – for me, at least – for kind of…people had a lot of preconceptions about me, I guess,” the singer said.
“I think it took a while to prove that this is a real thing and a real band, and not some kind of adventure or whatever. So I think it’s really incredible.”
The singer confessed that she’s not a big fan of terms like “girl-fronted rock band” and the like. Although she thinks it’s important for women to be represented in rock, she doesn’t want the gender divide to be such a high priority within the industry, and she wants her band to be opposed to everyone. other bands, not just those with female singers.
“I want to compete with the best of them, not just other women.”
